IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY

Improve Public Safety

Nathan Sweet is a professional Fire Fighter/Paramedic, Moorpark homeowner, and parent of three young children. Consequently, he is very concerned about Moorpark's recent spike in violent crime. He is also troubled that so many local businesses and public spaces are more frequently defaced with graffiti.

Nathan has publicly identified redundant municipal spending that can be eliminated to provide the funds to add one more Sheriff's Patrol Car to our streets seven days a week – a 50‰ increase – with NO ADDITIONAL COST TO MOORPARK TAXPAYERS!

He will bring together our police, local business owners, and community volunteers to rapidly erase gang graffiti and take the incentive out of "tagging" for juvenile offenders.

Nathan has proposed:

STIMULATE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In his Campaign Announcement and during his door–to–door campaign, Nathan has advocated for a new Farmer's Market on High Street to sell locally grown organic produce, dramatically reduce food costs and bring Moorpark families together.

Even before Election Day, on May 9th a new Farmer's Market will open. Nathan has worked with the proprietor, spread the word throughout Moorpark and discussed with business owners the potential of new customers visiting High Street weekly.

While other city council candidates propose that Moorpark sell–off our historic and recently renovated High Street Theater, Nathan proposes an expansion of the theater's use – including regular live music performances – to bring in new revenues and help transform High Street into the social destination it can and should be.

Nathan has proposed:

MAKE CITY HALL MORE ACCOUNTABLE & ACCESSIBLE

Nathan intends to expedite Moorpark municipal government's entry into the 21st Century and give every resident more opportunity to participate in the civic progress and engage public officials and city staff. We can access our community's new ideas and fresh energy if we find a way to make our City Hall more resident–friendly.

We can introduce and expand the use of interactive web presence, Twitter; 311; real time and off–site citizen participation technologies to engage residents and encourage greater public discourse in decision making.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL TRAFFIC

As a parent of three school age children, two of whom attend Walnut Canyon School, Nathan understands the frustration off out–of–control traffic back ups caused solely by student pick ups and drop–offs. These traffic back ups waste time, gas and money, and cause unnecessary emission pollution and driver anxiety. Nathan has identified Federal funding available through the SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL Program now managed by CalTrans. $48.5 million is currently available to communities like Moorpark for planning and infrastructure improvements specifically authorized to reduce public school drop–off and pick up related traffic congestion. To date, Moorpark has never applied for the money.
